| Room at the Top (1959) | Simone Signoret, Miriam Karlin "chain smokes her way through [the movie]. This woman could really smoke - just beautiful technique." "those who want to see uninhibited deep natural smoking will be delighted by the remarkably smoke-filled relationship between Simone and her younger lover. In the first smoking scene, she takes a cigarette from her cigarette case and accepts a light with a double-pump. In the second, she accepts a light, talks-and-dangles, performs a three-stage nasal exhale, then two more thick exhales through her nostrils. In a third scene, her lover places his cigarette between her lips; she dangles as she double-pumps and thick smoke pours from her nose. A fourth scene shows her lighting, taking three drags in just five seconds before removing the cigarette from her mouth with a talk-exhale. A nostril exhale and a natural exhale follow. She accepts a cigarette passed to her in a fifth scene, dangling and talk-exhaling. The sixth scene has her asking for a cigarette and accepting a light from her lover, who takes it from her mouth and kisses her farewell. [Karlin], in a very minor role, talks and dangles."
