"Winslet fans will not be disappointed. She has several scenes throughout and they are mostly well-filmed, with some nice light-ups, inhales and exhales, including some nose exhales. Kazan has one brief scene with a light-up and exhale. There is also a lot of background smoking in this film, which takes place in the early 50s, when smoking was so commonplace."
"I was really looking forward to this one, set among suburban pseudo-sophisticates in 1955 and starring longtime IRL-er Kate Winslet, and I'm here to tell you it doesn't disappoint. I think there are 7 or 8 different scenes, with lots of action, generally decent lighting, and a few close-ups. Plenty of lightups, deep drags, and thick exhales. Highlights: Kate lights up and smokes furiously, including one lengthy talking exhale, perfectly back-lit by the headlights of a parked car; smokes in the kitchen just before making vigorous love on the counter; and has an extended scene in a roadhouse in which she practically chain-smokes. Her style's pretty generic, but who could complain? A 4-star performance."
