Snow has two scenes in the beginning, is in the background both times. Only one exhale is shown, in the first scene. Shue has one good scene near the end." "Breslin smokes two or three times in the title role, and she tries, but she clearly doesn't smoke IRL at all. Her scenes include a well-filmed light-up and, later, a couple of close-up drags, with one or two quick uninhaled mouth exhales and a slight nose exhale, but it's quite awkward and even kind of sad, IMO. It's another case of a film in which they either should have either found a young actress who already smoked or not made a young actress smoke who hates smoking (as she has stated). Elizabeth Shue, as Janie's mother, smokes competently a couple of times, but her character is a run-down junkie just barely hanging in there, so that's not very attractive either."
