| House Across the Bay, The (1940) | Joan Bennett, Gladys George "[Bennett] doesn't start smoking until a little while into the movie, but after that she has several scenes, including a couple wearing black gloves." "About twenty minutes in Bennett is shown smoking by a window. A couple of minutes after that, she accepts a cigarette and a light and takes a couple of good drags. She blows out thick clouds of uninhaled smoke - the little she does take down, though, is exhaled naturally from her mouth and nose. George offers her a cigarette which she initially declines, but accepts when assured that it will 'do you good'. Later, there is a nice close-up of Bennett holding in a fur coat. Finally, she sings a song in a night club before asking for a light and taking a couple of solid, but largely uninhaled, drags. George smokes in two scenes."
