| Frida (2002) | Salma Hayek, Mía Maestro, Valeria Golino
"In the trailer for this biopic of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, Hayek,
in a close-up profile shot, dangles a cigarette from her lips as a
beautifully lit exhale flows from her mouth and nostrils. Looks to have
been inhaled, too, a first for her onscreen as far as I've seen. Kahlo
herself was a heavy smoker, so let's hope there's more, although that's all
I saw. I also caught a brief glimpse of Ashley Judd possibly holding,
although I couldn't say for sure."
"[Hayek] several scenes, a few good ones, not disappointing"
"Well, there's the lovely slow, dangling exhale scene that's been shown in
the trailer and the ads, plus one other terrific profile drag/exhale shot
from Hayek. And there are a few other drags and a lot of holding scattered
throughout. But considering she's in every scene of this 2-hour movie, set
in the bohemian art world and taking place mostly in the 30s and 40s, I'd
hoped for more. One more bit of good news: she's definitely learned to
inhale. As for the others, Golino holds in two or three scenes and can
briefly seen exhaling in the background once, and the (VERY lovely) Maestro
holds in about 5 scenes, but never does anything else. And there's a bit
of background smoking by extras in various bar and party scenes."

Salma Hayek - Info - "In another scene, Hayek as Frida Kahlo [in Frida (2002)] puffs sensually on a filterless cigarette. The smoke surrounds her in a luminous white cloud, contrasting with her dark hair and coloring. Again, Taymor gets excited -- the lighting is so serene and Hayek's profile so sculptured", Los Angeles Times , Oct. 13, '02

Salma Hayek - Proof - "Salma Hayek couldn't learn to smoke for her new film. The 32-year-old star of [Frida (2002)] couldn't master the art of smoking for the role of the painter 'Frida Kahlo'. She says, 'The worst was learning how to smoke! I couldn't do it. I wouldn't aim right at my mouth, the cigarette, and I don't understand why. I'm pretty coordinated. I hated it, I was dizzy.' She says she and co-star Alfred Molina joke that the movie will give him a heart attack, because he had to gain so much weight, 'and me lung cancer'", World Entertainment News Network, Jun. 19, '01
Salma Hayek - Proof - no - on her role as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in the upcoming movie Frida (2002): "Hayek herself does Kahlo's painting: 'It's no fake hand doing brush strokes,' she says. 'Painting is the best part. The worst was learning how to smoke! I couldn't do it. I wouldn't aim right at my mouth, the cigarette, and I don't understand why. I'm pretty coordinated. I hated it -- I was dizzy.'", USA Today , Jun. '01
Salma Hayek - Proof - quit - "Marie Claire: Adversity only seems to make you stronger. What's something you've recently overcome? Salma: I quit smoking three weeks ago. I used to have a terrible judgement of smokers. I was like, Why do they do this? It tastes bad, it's going to kill them, and it doesn't even get them high. It's the shittiest vice you could possibly pick. Then I got hooked during [Frida (2002)]. I've tried to quit before. But this time I'm done with it. I've changed. I know I can do it. I've reinvented myself a thousand times - it keeps me from getting bored of myself", Marie Claire, May '07
