"The 17 1/2-year-old goddess, Mischa Barton, lit up and smoked part of a cigarette near the beginning of the episode. She saw a strange guy smoking outside her neighbors' house, looked over her shoulder to see if her parents were looking, and asked, 'Hey, can I bum a cigarette?' A moment later, we see Mischa with a cigarette between her fingers, moving it toward her lips to light up and provide smoke to her needy lungs. She expects neighbor boy to flick a lighter to ignite her cigarette, but she smiles broadly as she sees that he is moving his cigarette to hers to light her with its tip. Mischa is about to smoke. The director briefly shows the light-up over Mischa's right shoulder, but quickly switches to a straight-on shot of her holding her cigarette to her lips with her long, slender fingers, her cheeks curving in as her lungs provide suction, and a three-second glow as the tobacco she is preparing to smoke is ignited. Lowering her cigarette from her lips, she gives him a huge, sweet smile, then purses her lips as her exhaled smoke is caught by a light breeze. She then smiles with pride just as all the cigarette smoke has left her body. We see another complete drag, and a cute uninhaled puff. Then, as an adult walks up, we see her perform a final exhale downward, attempting to conceal the cigarette smoke flowing from her lips. Hers is not the voluminous smoking of a veteran, but her style is lovely, and she smokes with obvious pride and joy."
